Why Ugg Repair Matters for Your Favorite Boots

Ugg repair can save your beloved boots from the landfill and restore them to like-new condition. Here’s what you need to know:

Quick Answer: Your Ugg Repair Options

  • Minor scuffs and stains: Clean with a suede brush, eraser, or specialized cleaner (DIY, ~$10-20)
  • Water stains: Dampen evenly, stuff with paper, and air dry naturally (DIY, free)
  • Small holes or tears: Patch with fabric glue or iron-on suede patches (DIY, ~$5-15)
  • Worn soles: Professional resole service starting at $60
  • Deep cleaning and restoration: Professional service from $40-80
  • Full restoration: Resole, binding replacement, and cleaning for $80

When you slip on your favorite Uggs and notice worn soles, scuffs, or water stains, you face a decision: repair or replace? The good news is that most Ugg boot damage is repairable, allowing you to extend the life of your boots for years.

The challenge is knowing which repairs you can do yourself and when professional restoration is the better choice. A simple water stain might be a home project, but a detached sole needs expert attention.

Repairing your Uggs isn’t just about saving money—though you can save $100-200 compared to buying new. It’s about sustainability and preserving that broken-in comfort you can’t get from a new pair.

I’m Eric Neuner, founder of NuShoe Inc. Since 1994, my team has specialized in expert shoe restoration, including Ugg repair through our UGGrenew program. We’ve restored millions of pairs of shoes, helping people extend the life of their favorite footwear.

In this guide, you’ll learn to assess damage, tackle simple home repairs, and know when professional restoration is your best option.

Assessing the Damage: Is Your Ugg Boot Repairable?

Before starting any Ugg repair, examine your boots to understand the specific issues. The delicate suede and sheepskin of Uggs face unique challenges.

  • Scuffs and stains: Everyday dirt, salt, and spills are common. Water stains are notorious for leaving dark, uneven patches.
  • Worn-out soles: The comfortable foam soles gradually lose tread and can separate from the upper part of the boot.
  • Tears and holes: These often appear on the toe or at the seams and tend to grow if not addressed.
  • Water damage: Beyond staining, severe soaking can make sheepskin stiff, shrunken, and discolored.
  • Flattened lining: The plush fleece lining inevitably compresses with wear, reducing warmth and comfort.

Some boots, however, may be beyond saving. Major structural damage, like extensive tears where the sheepskin is falling apart, may not be worth the cost of repair. Likewise, severely shrunken or rigid sheepskin from heat or water damage is difficult to restore. Extensive mold or mildew that has penetrated the material is a health concern and nearly impossible to fully remove.

When to Repair vs. When to Replace

Your decision should balance cost, value, and sustainability.

  • DIY Repair: Best for minor issues like light scuffs, small stains, or freshening the lining. These fixes cost little to nothing and are highly effective for simple maintenance.
  • Professional Repair: The ideal choice for significant damage like worn-out soles, deep stains, or damaged binding. Our UGGrenew program services cost between $40 and $80, a fraction of the $100+ price of new boots. This is the most cost-effective way to address structural problems and extend your boots’ life.
  • Replacement: Consider this only when boots have catastrophic damage (e.g., are falling apart, severely shrunken) or when the cost of multiple complex repairs approaches the price of a new pair.

Don’t forget sentimental value. The broken-in comfort and memories attached to your favorite pair can’t be bought. By choosing to repair, you’re also making a sustainable choice. Since 1994, NuShoe has repaired over 5 million pairs of shoes, keeping them out of landfills and reducing waste.

How to Remove Water Stains and Scuffs

Water stains and scuffs are a common complaint. With the right technique, you can often remove them completely.

  1. Brush off loose dirt with a suede brush. For dry scuffs, use a suede eraser first.
  2. Dampen the entire boot evenly with a spray bottle or sponge and cold water. This prevents new water rings from forming.
  3. Clean the stained areas by applying a small amount of sheepskin cleaner to a wet sponge, working in gentle circles. For salt stains, a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water can be effective.
  4. Wipe away excess cleaner with a damp cloth.
  5. Stuff the boots firmly with newspaper to absorb moisture and maintain their shape.
  6. Air dry for at least 24 hours away from direct heat or sunlight.
  7. Finish by brushing with the suede brush to restore the nap.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Simple Ugg Repair for Holes

A small hole in the toe or a split seam can be patched to extend your boots’ life.

  1. Clean the boot and let it dry completely.
  2. Push any protruding fleece back inside and stuff the boot firmly to create a stable surface.
  3. Cut a suede patch slightly larger than the hole. Iron-on patches are excellent for this.
  4. Apply the patch. For an iron-on patch, set your iron to low heat (silk setting). Place a thin cloth over the patch and press for 20-30 seconds. Let it cool completely.
  5. Reinforce (optional) by applying fabric glue around the patch edges or using a needle and thread to secure a split seam before patching.
  6. Let dry for at least 24 hours before wearing.

Restoring Comfort: Lining and Insole Fixes

While you can’t permanently re-fluff a compressed sheepskin lining, you can easily restore comfort.

The best solution is to add new sheepskin insoles. They slip right into your boots and instantly bring back that plush, warm feeling. To combat odors, sprinkle baking soda inside, let it sit overnight, and vacuum it out. Professional services use ozone machines for deep odor removal, but this is a great at-home trick.

The Ultimate Ugg Care Guide: Prevention is the Best Repair

You know the old saying about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure? When it comes to your favorite Ugg boots, those words couldn’t be truer. The best Ugg repair is the one you never have to make. A few minutes of regular care can save you from water stains and worn soles, adding years to your boots’ life.

Protecting Your Boots from the Elements

Suede is delicate, but you can create an invisible shield against water and stains. Waterproofing spray is your first line of defense. Before their first wear, treat your Uggs with a quality spray designed for suede and sheepskin. This will create a protective barrier that repels water.

To apply, hold the can 6-8 inches away and mist an even coat over the entire boot in a well-ventilated area. Let them dry overnight. Reapply every few weeks in wet weather or every few months for occasional wear. If water no longer beads on the surface, it’s time for another treatment.

Best Practices for Cleaning and Storage

How you care for your Uggs between wears makes a huge difference.

  • Brush regularly: Give your boots a quick brush with a soft suede brush each time you take them off to prevent dirt from setting in.
  • Store properly: Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat, which can cause fading, stiffening, and shrinkage.
  • Keep them dry: Ensure boots are completely dry before storing them. Cedar shavings can absorb moisture and keep them fresh.
  • Maintain their shape: Stuff your boots with newspaper, old t-shirts, or boot shapers to prevent creasing. Avoid traditional shoe trees, which can compress the fleece.
  • Use breathable storage: The original box or a fabric bag is perfect. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture and can lead to mold.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ugg Repair

After repairing over 5 million pairs of shoes, we’ve heard every question. Here are answers to the most common ones about Ugg repair.

Can the sheepskin lining of Uggs be repaired?

Unfortunately, once the sheepskin lining has flattened from wear, it cannot be fluffed back to its original state. The compression is permanent.

However, the best solution is simple and effective: add new sheepskin insoles. They slip right in and instantly restore that plush, cozy feeling underfoot. While our UGGrenew program thoroughly steam cleans the existing lining to remove dirt and odors, we do not replace the lining itself. New insoles are an easy, affordable way to make a huge difference in comfort.

How long does a typical Ugg boot repair take?

The timeline depends on the method:

  • DIY fixes: Most at-home repairs, like cleaning stains or patching a small hole, take under an hour of active work, plus up to 24 hours of drying time.
  • Professional services: Our UGGrenew mail-in service takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the day you ship your boots to when you receive them back. This includes shipping time both ways and the handcrafted restoration process.

What are the benefits of repairing Uggs versus buying new ones?

Choosing repair offers several key advantages:

  • Cost Savings: Professional restoration ($40-$80) is significantly cheaper than buying a new pair of Uggs ($100-$200+).
  • Sustainability: Repairing keeps boots out of landfills, reducing waste and conserving the resources needed to manufacture new products. It’s an environmentally responsible choice.
  • Sentimental Value: You get to keep the boots that have molded perfectly to your feet and hold personal memories. That broken-in comfort is irreplaceable.
  • Extended Life: Quality boots are an investment. Proper repair extends that investment, allowing you to enjoy your favorite pair for many more years.
